Privacy policy

What stays on your device, what leaves it, and how to change your mind.

Who we are

whytyping (whytyping.com) is a free typing test and practice site operated by whytyping, which is the controller of the limited personal data described here. There are no accounts, and we run no server that receives your typing results.

What stays in your browser

Your results, personal bests, streak, lesson progress and settings are stored in this browser only, under the key whytyping:v1. Two small keys sit beside it: whytyping:ui for your theme and text size, and whytyping:consent for your analytics choice. We never receive any of them. Statistics about your keys are kept as running averages, so the site never stores what you typed. Clearing your browser data or switching devices removes all of it, which is why Settings offers a backup.

What leaves your device

Nothing is sent to analytics services unless you choose Accept on the consent bar. If you accept, two services receive usage data:

  • Google Analytics 4 receives pages visited, device and browser type, approximate location derived from your IP address, the site that referred you, and events such as a test being completed. Events carry the test mode and a speed band, never the text you typed.
  • Microsoft Clarity receives the same kind of usage data and records sessions: clicks, scrolling and page interaction. The typing area is masked, so keystrokes and the text on screen there are never recorded.

If you choose Reject, neither script is loaded and nothing is sent. As with any website, the network that delivers the pages (Cloudflare) processes your IP address to serve them and to protect the site.

Legal basis and consent

Analytics run on your consent, under Article 6(1)(a) of the GDPR and the UK GDPR. Google Consent Mode starts with analytics storage denied, and advertising storage stays denied. You can withdraw consent at any time from Cookie settings in the footer; withdrawing does not affect processing that happened before. Storing your progress in your own browser is necessary to provide the features you ask for and needs no consent.

Processors and transfers

Google Ireland Limited and Google LLC provide Google Analytics, and Microsoft Corporation provides Clarity. They act as our processors for this data. It may be processed in the United States and other countries, under the safeguards those companies apply to international transfers, such as the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses. Their own policies explain more: Google's privacy policy and the Microsoft privacy statement.

Storage and cookies

Browser storage holds your progress because the features you use need it:

KeyWhat it holdsLifetime
whytyping:v1Your results, personal bests, streak, lesson progress and settingsUntil you delete it
whytyping:uiTheme, text size and motion choice, so the page looks right before it loadsUntil you delete it
whytyping:consentWhether you accepted or rejected analyticsUntil you delete it

Analytics cookies are set only after you accept:

Retention

Analytics data is kept for the providers' standard periods: up to 14 months in Google Analytics, and as described in Microsoft's documentation for Clarity. Data in your browser stays until you delete it or your browser clears it. Some browsers, including Safari, clear website data if you do not visit for about a week.

Children's privacy

whytyping is not directed at children under 13, or under 16 in the EU and UK, and we do not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has accepted analytics on this site, contact us and we will ask our processors to remove the data.

Your rights

Under the GDPR and UK GDPR you can ask what analytics data exists about you, ask for it to be corrected or erased, object to or restrict its use, ask for a portable copy, and withdraw consent at any time. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.

Under the CCPA and CPRA, California residents can ask to know what personal information is collected and ask for it to be deleted, and will not be treated differently for doing so. We do not sell or share personal information.

You can also opt out at the source: Google offers a Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on, and Microsoft explains Clarity's controls in its Clarity consent documentation. Because analytics identify a browser rather than a person, tell us which browser and roughly when you visited so we can find the data.

Advertising

This version of whytyping shows no advertising and loads no advertising scripts. If that changes, this policy and the consent bar will be updated before any ad is shown.

Export or delete your progress

Settings, the sliders icon at the top of every page, lets you export a sealed backup file or delete everything stored in this browser. Deleting there removes your results, streak and settings at once, and nothing remains with us because we never held it.

Changes to this policy

When this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. If a change affects what leaves your device, the consent bar will ask again.
