How typing streaks work
Your streak counts consecutive calendar days with at least one qualifying session: a test, drill or lesson of 30 seconds or more, or the Daily Challenge. A freeze, earned every 7 days, forgives one missed day.

A streak is a simple count of how many days in a row you showed up. It exists to make short daily practice easy to keep, and its rules are deliberately few.
What counts as a day
One qualifying session per calendar day keeps the streak going. A session qualifies if it is:
- a typing test of 30 seconds or longer,
- a smart drill of 30 seconds or longer,
- a finished lesson that took 30 seconds or longer, or
- the Daily Challenge, which always counts.
Doing more sessions on that date does not add extra days. The run also has to be a real one: a result that is too short to score, or that is not counted because accuracy was under 50%, does not move the streak.
When the day changes
The day is your device’s local calendar date, and it turns over at your local midnight. Travel across time zones and your day moves with your clock. There is no server deciding what day it is.
Your first day
Finishing your first qualifying test is day 1. Until then the streak counter in the header stays hidden, so a new visitor never sees a zero.
Freezes
A freeze covers for a day you missed.
- You earn one freeze each time your streak reaches a multiple of 7 days.
- You can hold two at most.
- If you miss a day and have a freeze, it is used automatically and the streak continues when you next practise.
- One freeze forgives one missed day. Miss more days than you have freezes and the streak starts again at 1.
A day covered by a freeze is marked on your calendar so you can tell it apart from a day you practised.
Longest streak and milestones
Alongside the current streak, whytyping keeps your longest one. Reaching each 7-day mark is recorded as a milestone on your progress chart. At your first 7-day streak you are also offered a one-tap backup, because by then you have something worth keeping.
Where it is stored
Your streak lives in your browser, with the rest of your progress. Nothing about it is sent anywhere. That also means clearing your browser data, or using a private window, removes it. Some browsers clear site data if you do not visit for about a week. Exporting a backup from Settings protects against all of these.
Using a streak well
A streak is a prompt, not a score. Its job is to get you to the keyboard for a few minutes. A one-minute typing test is enough to qualify, and it fits into the plan described in the typing practice routine. If a streak breaks, nothing else is lost: your personal bests, tiers and history are untouched, and day 1 is one test away.
Questions
Does a 15-second test count toward my streak?
No. A test or drill needs to be at least 30 seconds. The Daily Challenge always counts, whatever its length.
How many freezes can I hold?
Two at most. You earn one each time your streak reaches another 7 days, and it is not added if you already hold two.
Will my streak follow me to another device?
No. It is stored in the browser you used. Export a backup and import it on the other device to carry it over.
