About this lesson

Real writing mixes capitals into ordinary words, and the skill is switching Shift hands without thinking about it.

These lines are sentence openings: one capital, then lower-case words. Punctuation is left out for now so that you can concentrate on the capitals. It arrives in the next level. If one hand keeps reaching for the wrong Shift, slow down and say the side out loud until the choice becomes a habit.

Hand position

  • Choose the Shift key on the opposite side from the letter you are capitalising.
  • Keep your rhythm through the capital rather than pausing before it.
  • Let the Shift finger come back to its home key each time.

This lesson is defined by its characters rather than by key position, so it is the same on every keyboard layout. It takes about 4 minutes: six short lines, passed at 92% accuracy. Speed is not part of the pass mark.
