Lessons work best with a physical keyboard. The full finger guide appears on tablets and wider.

About this lesson

Fluency is evenness. A typist who holds a steady pace is faster over a minute than one who sprints and stumbles, and makes fewer mistakes on the way.

This lesson uses the same kind of common words as the standard typing test. Treat it as a rehearsal: no new keys, only rhythm. If you notice yourself speeding up on easy words, hold back until every key lands on the same beat.

Hand position

  • Aim for the same gap between every keystroke.
  • Type common words as single movements, not letter by letter.
  • Breathe, relax your shoulders and keep your wrists level.

This lesson is defined by its characters rather than by key position, so it is the same on every keyboard layout. It takes about 5 minutes: six short lines, passed at 92% accuracy. Speed is not part of the pass mark.
