Lessons work best with a physical keyboard. The full finger guide appears on tablets and wider.

About this lesson

Touch typing starts from one fixed position. The two bumps on the home row tell your index fingers where they are without a glance down, and every other key is found by its distance from them.

This first lesson uses only those two keys. It is meant to be easy: the goal is to stop looking at your hands, not to go fast.

Hand position

  • Rest both index fingers on the two home-row keys with small raised bumps.
  • Let your other fingers fall on the keys beside them and keep both thumbs over the space bar.
  • Press each key with a light tap and let the finger return to its bump.

On a US (QWERTY) keyboard this lesson's keys are F and J. Lessons follow key positions, so on another layout the same fingers practise the keys that sit in the same places. It takes about 2 minutes: six short lines, passed at 92% accuracy. Speed is not part of the pass mark.
