Bottom row: index fingers (V and M)
Index fingers curl down to the bottom row.
Lessons work best with a physical keyboard. The full finger guide appears on tablets and wider.
About this lesson
Reaching down feels different from reaching up: the finger curls instead of stretching. The bottom row is used less than the other two, so these keys get less practice in ordinary typing.
That makes deliberate practice worth more here. A few careful minutes on these reaches will remove errors that would otherwise linger for months. Go gently and let the movement become familiar before you push the pace.
Hand position
- Each index finger moves down one row and slightly to the right.
- Curl the finger under rather than dropping the wrist.
- Return to the bump after each press.
On a US (QWERTY) keyboard this lesson's keys are V and M. Lessons follow key positions, so on another layout the same fingers practise the keys that sit in the same places. It takes about 3 minutes: six short lines, passed at 92% accuracy. Speed is not part of the pass mark.
