Lessons work best with a physical keyboard. The full finger guide appears on tablets and wider.

About this lesson

This is your first reach. Each index finger covers two columns, so it has to leave its bump, press the centre key and come straight home again.

The return matters as much as the reach. If the finger stays in the middle, the next key will be wrong. Practise the movement slowly until coming back is automatic. A few slow, clean lines here are worth more than one fast, messy one.

Hand position

  • The two keys in the centre of the home row belong to the index fingers.
  • Reach sideways with the index finger only, then return it to its bump.
  • Keep the other three fingers of that hand resting where they are.

On a US (QWERTY) keyboard this lesson's keys are G and H. Lessons follow key positions, so on another layout the same fingers practise the keys that sit in the same places. It takes about 3 minutes: six short lines, passed at 92% accuracy. Speed is not part of the pass mark.
