Lessons work best with a physical keyboard. The full finger guide appears on tablets and wider.

About this lesson

The little fingers finish the resting position: eight fingers on eight keys, thumbs on the space bar. Everything else on the keyboard is typed by leaving this position briefly and coming back.

Little fingers tire quickly, so keep the taps light. Accuracy matters more than pace, and a pass needs 92% of keys correct. If your hand aches, stop for a minute and shake it loose.

Hand position

  • The little fingers rest on the outermost home keys of each hand.
  • Use a short, relaxed tap rather than pushing from the wrist.
  • After each key, check that all eight fingers are back in their resting places.

On a US (QWERTY) keyboard this lesson's keys are A and ;. Lessons follow key positions, so on another layout the same fingers practise the keys that sit in the same places. It takes about 3 minutes: six short lines, passed at 92% accuracy. Speed is not part of the pass mark.
