Home row: words
The whole home row together, in real words where your layout has them.
Lessons work best with a physical keyboard. The full finger guide appears on tablets and wider.
About this lesson
Single keys are the alphabet of typing; words are where rhythm begins. This lesson uses every home-row key you have learned and nothing else.
Some layouts make many words from the home row and some make very few. Where real words run out, the lines fall back to short key patterns instead of inventing nonsense words. Either way the fingers learn the same movements, so the lesson counts just as much.
Hand position
- Keep all eight fingers resting on the home row between words.
- Press the space bar with whichever thumb feels natural, and keep using that one.
- Read one word ahead so your fingers know what comes next.
This lesson is defined by its characters rather than by key position, so it is the same on every keyboard layout. It takes about 4 minutes: six short lines, passed at 92% accuracy. Speed is not part of the pass mark.
