Lessons work best with a physical keyboard. The full finger guide appears on tablets and wider.

About this lesson

The top row holds some of the most used keys on most layouts, so this is where practice lines start to look like ordinary language.

Keep the heel of your hand still and let the finger stretch. If your whole hand travels up, you will lose the home row and have to look down to find it again. A slow reach that lands on the right key is the whole point today.

Hand position

  • Each middle finger moves straight up one row and slightly to the left.
  • Lift the finger rather than sliding the whole hand forward.
  • Come back down to the home key after every press.

On a US (QWERTY) keyboard this lesson's keys are E and I. Lessons follow key positions, so on another layout the same fingers practise the keys that sit in the same places. It takes about 3 minutes: six short lines, passed at 92% accuracy. Speed is not part of the pass mark.
