Lessons work best with a physical keyboard. The full finger guide appears on tablets and wider.

About this lesson

Your index fingers are the most agile, and on every layout they carry the largest share of the work. These two top-row keys are an easy reach from the bumps.

Combined with the earlier lessons, you can now type a good range of short words. Aim for an even pace, with the same gap between every key. Counting quietly in your head, one beat per key, helps more than it sounds.

Hand position

  • Each index finger moves up one row from its home key.
  • The movement is short, so keep it small and quick.
  • Feel for the bump when the finger lands back on the home row.

On a US (QWERTY) keyboard this lesson's keys are R and U. Lessons follow key positions, so on another layout the same fingers practise the keys that sit in the same places. It takes about 3 minutes: six short lines, passed at 92% accuracy. Speed is not part of the pass mark.
