For when the standard test feels too kind
If you can type common words quickly and accurately, you have mastered about half the keyboard. The other half, the number row, the symbols and the Shift combinations, is where even strong typists stumble.
This test spends two minutes there. The text mixes ordinary words with capitals, punctuation and numbers, and it does not let up.
What makes it hard
On a plain test your fingers rarely leave the three letter rows. Here they must:
- reach up to the number row and return to the home position without looking;
- hold Shift with one hand while the other strikes a key, again and again;
- switch between letters, digits and marks inside a single word or figure.
Each of these breaks the smooth flow that fast typists rely on. Speed drops, and accuracy drops with it unless you slow down deliberately.
A different way to judge the result
Do not compare this number with your common-word best. Judge it on its own terms:
Did accuracy hold? Every keystroke counts, including the ones you fixed. Keeping accuracy high on this text is the main achievement.
Was the second minute as good as the first? The speed graph will tell you. A steady line means your symbol typing is becoming automatic.
Which characters hurt? Look at where the error dots fall and think back to what you were typing.
A tier still applies if you reach the required speed and accuracy together, though earning one on this text is a stiff task. The requirements are on the typing tiers explained page.
Working up to it
If two minutes is too much, the typing test with punctuation offers the same text for one. Take that until your accuracy is steady, then return here.
If two minutes becomes comfortable, the data entry typing test extends the same material to five.
And when you have had enough, the easy typing test is a pleasant way to cool down.
Practice between attempts
The lessons on the Learn page include levels for capitals, punctuation and numbers, each teaching which finger should make the reach. A few minutes there often does more for this test than repeated attempts at the test itself.
