A test where speed is not the point

On this page nothing is counting down. You have a hundred words of ordinary sentences to type, and you may take as long as you like. The question is not how fast you finish but how few wrong keys you press on the way.

Removing the timer changes how people type. Without a clock to race, you can find the pace at which your fingers stop making mistakes. That pace is the foundation everything else is built on.

How accuracy is measured here

Every key you press is counted. A correct key adds to both the correct total and the overall total. A wrong key adds only to the overall total, and it stays counted even if you press Backspace and fix it.

So accuracy answers a simple question: of all the keys you pressed, what share were right the first time?

This is stricter than looking at the finished text. A paragraph can end up perfect and still show a modest accuracy figure if it took a lot of corrections to get there. Those corrections cost time in real work, which is why they are counted.

What to look at in the result

The character counts. Correct, incorrect and missed. Missed characters come from pressing space before a word is complete.

The keyboard map. Keys with three or more errors are filled, darker for more. Keys with one or two are outlined with their count. On a hundred-word run this map is detailed enough to trust.

The error dots on the speed graph. If they bunch together, something specific tripped you: a hard word, a capital, a lapse in attention.

Turning the result into practice

Pick the two or three keys the map highlights and run the smart drill, which fills a minute with real words containing them. Then return here and type the hundred words again. The guide on how to improve typing accuracy describes a fuller routine.

Accuracy also decides your tier. Each tier needs a minimum speed and a minimum accuracy together, as set out on the typing tiers explained page, so a fast but untidy run can earn less than a slower, cleaner one.

The same distance, plain words

If you want the hundred-word distance without capitals and punctuation, use the 100-word typing test. Bests for the two presets are kept apart in this browser. No account is needed.

Questions

What score counts as a good result on the accuracy test?

Aim to finish with as few corrections as you can. Each tier on whytyping has its own accuracy minimum, listed on the typing tiers page.

Why did my accuracy drop even though I fixed every mistake?

Accuracy counts every key you press, so a wrong key lowers it even after you correct it. Only your speed ignores fixed errors.

Is it better to fix mistakes or leave them?

Fix them. Characters left wrong do not count toward your speed, and correcting as you go builds the habit of typing cleanly.
