The balanced word-count test
Fifty words is the default distance for word-count mode, and for good reason. It is long enough to produce a stable speed figure and short enough that you can see the end from the start.
As you type, the large number on the card counts seconds upward and a small label tracks your progress through the fifty words. When you complete the final word, the test stops by itself.
Timed test or word-count test?
Both measure the same skill, but they feel different, and the difference can change how you type.
| Timed test | 50-word test | |
|---|---|---|
| What is fixed | The seconds | The words |
| What varies | How much you type | How long you take |
| Ends when | The clock hits zero | You finish the last word |
If a countdown makes you rush and fumble, the word-count format may give you a truer result. If you like the urgency, the 1-minute typing test is the closest timed equivalent.
Getting a clean run
With a fixed distance there is no reward for squeezing in extra words at the end, so you can keep a steady tempo all the way through. A few suggestions:
- Read one word ahead of the one you are typing.
- Finish every word before pressing space. A skipped ending counts as missed characters.
- Fix mistakes with Backspace as soon as you notice them. Fixed errors lower accuracy but leave your speed based only on correct characters.
After the fiftieth word
The result screen gives you speed, accuracy, raw speed and consistency, plus the keyboard map of your errors and your slowest letter pairs. Slow pairs are often more revealing than missed keys: they show the transitions where your fingers hesitate. The smart drill builds a minute of practice around them.
For broader technique, the guide on how to type faster has more.
Choosing your distance
Not sure which word count to use? Start here. If fifty words is over too quickly to feel like a test, move to the 100-word typing test. If you want something you can repeat many times in a short break, drop to the 25-word typing test.
Each distance keeps a separate personal best in this browser, and no account is needed.
