Word chain
Type a real word that starts with the last letter of the one before. One minute, as many links as you can.
How to play word chain
Word chain is the old car-journey game with a keyboard. The chain starts with a word, and every new word must begin with the last letter of the one before: house, every, yellow, water, river. Type the word and press Enter to add it. You have one minute from your first key, and your score is the number of links you add before time runs out.
A link counts if it is a real English word of at least three letters that has not been used in this chain. British and American spellings both work. If a word is refused, the box says why, whether it starts with the wrong letter, is too short, was used already, or is not in the dictionary, and you simply try another.
Why it helps your typing
Most typing practice hands you the words. Here you have to think of them, which is closer to real writing: the pause is in your head, not your fingers, and the faster you can turn a thought into keystrokes, the more links you make. Awkward letters are part of the fun. A word ending in x or q leaves the next player stuck, so in a two-player game a cruel ending can win a round.
Solo or two players
Alone, you are racing the clock and your own best chain. With two players on one device, you take turns, one word each, and each keeps their own count; the chain and the clock are shared. Names stay only for the game. A chain of a minute counts toward your daily streak, but it never changes the personal bests from typing tests.
